So I'm curious which of the new Fall TV shows you guys checked out, what you thought, what you are going to stick around for, and which returning shows.
The Bad:
For the heck of it I checked out the Pilot for Kaley's new show Big Bang Theory. Absolute crap. And not because of KC, she's back in the role she does best the dumb sitcom blonde. Although it was hard to tell if she was supposed to be dumb or just not a genius...characterization on the show was beyond awful. The male leads were not so much characters as poorly drawn stereotypes of Nerds. It's a shame because I really like Parsons and think he has that kind of "it" for comedy, but this show is crap. It's predictable nerd joke after nerd joke, a show trying to be cool that just made me cringe, especially for the actors.
Sad thing is that wasn't even the worst show I saw this season, that honor goes to the Cavemen show. There are just no words to describe how unfunny that piece of suck is. I'd rather watch Mr. & Mrs. Witch over and over again than watch another episode of that. Aren't TV shows screened to focus groups anymore? Because how could that have gotten through? Of course that will teach me to watch a comedy on ABC. Blech... I can't recall the last time ABC aired a good new sitcom.
The Good:
Reaper
I'm not as in love with this show as some people are. Some of felt just too cheezy and predictable, which I guess can be a good thing as it shakes off my fears of it being a bad Supernatural clone. A little cheese is endearing, like the vaccuum as vessel was cool. The special FX of the demon with the fire shooting out the ground in almost slow motion rows? and the whole being knocked into the building and emerging all dramatic like, felt a little too low budget horror B movie. The plot itself though was pretty solid and enjoyable, and who can hate a show that has someone run over by a zamboni?
Besides I really like the main character of Sam (unfortunate name as this is inevitably going to be paired with Supernatural at some point, and characters with the same name in consecutive show is a pet peeve...) Harrison could become another breakout CW actor. Ray wise as the Devil totally reminds me of Alec Baldwin on 30 Rock. Which since in an interview the creators said they initially wanted Alec Baldwin for the role, can definitely be considered a mission accomplished for having a likable devil. Andi is okay in the predictable role of potential love interest who can't know about his "job". I don't instantly hate her which is more than I could say for Lana, Jessica (before she awesomely met her end), and a host of other characters in that role.
Sock grated a bit on me a little too stereotypical of a loser best friend stoner although he and Harrison did seem to have some decent chemistry. The same couldn't be said for Sock's ex-girlfriend who I'm really hoping is just an occasional guest start and not a real series regular with them inevitably getting back together.
Back to You
I know I can't believe I'm watching a standard comedy on FOX. And I don't even particularly like Grammar or Heaton, I mainly tuned in to see Willard to see if his character was similiar to his Anchorman counterpart. Yet I was surprisingly hooked, Grammar is still a bit too in your for my liking, but Heaton was really turned down from what I remember annoying me when I happened to catch the end of a Raymond rerun. As long as the show stays ensemble enough and the material stays as quick as some of the stuff in the second episode (fish deaths when you least expected them, and the awesome taser bit by Burrell) I'll leave this on my Wednesday DVR.
Chuck
This show requires a ridiculous amount of suspension of disbelief. Seriously had to forget almost everything I knew about how the CIA/NSA operates. Yet it was just so entertaining, the characters endearing especially Chuck, although for some reason I think Captain Awesome is currently my favorite character...and he's not even a main character, and he is pretty much supposed to be a douchebag... Odd. Anyways it's a fun show that has a lot of potential and room to grow. Also can't wait for the fallout when Chuck and Sarah find out that Casey was the one that killed Bryce. (Not to mention for answers for many other questions established in the show like why Bryce sent the email to Chuck, why he went rogue, why Chuck was kicked out of school, what is with that recurring pie image, etc)
Unsure:
Journey Man
Bionic Woman
Both were just okay pilots to me. Found myself bored at times with both of these, a little surprised about that for BW, and I'm just not feeling the Michelle Ryan love yet. Both shows may just need time to find their feet, unfortunately for Journey Man the time slot after Heroes is notorious for viewers that aren't that patient. So it better get interesting fast or it will be a victim of an early round of cancellations.
Pushing Daisies
The Pilot really felt a lot like a mini-movie, it was good, the characters were great, in fact it was almost too good. That I'm not sure how subsequent episodes can manage to not dissapoint? I'm just not sure how this is really going to work as a weekly series without becoming too much like Medium or Ghost Whisperer?
Returning Shows:
Heroes
Prison Break
24
Smallville
Supernatural
My Name is Earl / The Office / Scrubs / 30 Rock
Family Guy (Sunday night TV pretty much sucks now for me. Totally not into Desperate Housewives or Grays.)
