This week has been the crazies so far in the school year. I’m a senior in high school and I know I want to be a journalist. I love to write and I love designing the newspaper pages. It’s fun. Last April, I was told that I would be co-News Editor. I was very happy to hear that because 1) it’s great for college applications and 2) it’s a great learning experience for me. Then, about a month ago, my adviser told me something amazing. I had been promoted to Content Editor (on top of News). I was so excited. I worked so hard for The Vertical; in fact, I was there as much as the Editor-in-Chief was, and spent more time than the two Assistant Editors-in-Chief. I just loved it that much. Actually, Brittany (Chief) and Sarah (one of the Assistants), along with some of the other staff, joke that I’m in the room too much. I am. Fourth period is Newspaper, then lunch, and then fifth period I intern for my adviser. I’m in the Newspaper room for 2 hours a day, plus after school when the paper needs worked on. Sarah says that I need a cot. lol. I’m glad that they know how much I put into it. And I do believe the Staff does, too. They come to me (and Brittany and Ashley ((other assistant))) and they know. It’s the rest of the school who don’t know what it takes to make a paper that don’t. Which was why when Mrs. Doughtry told me that she promoted me to Content Editor, I was so thankful because the student body would know, too. (Or at least the ones who read the paper and the Staff box.)
Well, about two weeks ago, Mrs. Doughtry and I were in her room and she and I talked. Yes, be afraid for me. I knew it was bad. She, Brittany, Ashley, and Sarah had been having a talk during lunch. She told me that I had been doing too much. Can you believe that? TOO MUCH, and I’m getting a talk about it! So, I listen to what she says and nod, and at one point, blink away tears because I shouldn’t cry over this. I know that I need to limit myself, it’s just that I love it way too much, and some people are just not doing their jobs!
So, this past week, we had a deadline of Monday, the ninth. OOPS! Does it sound like we got it out then? So, I’m there with Brittany until late working at the stupid paper until god knows when. Monday, I stayed at school until 7: 30 PM! School ends at 3! That was the latest for the week, but a few days it was until 5. Have no fear, the paper was sent yesterday! Four days late, but it was sent. I’m really going to have to take pictures of the paper for you guys to show you my talent that I know you all are *dying* to see.
So, as I was working yesterday, Mrs. Doughtry says she needs to tell me something. OH SHIT! What now? I was going crazy! Hello, I stayed so late for this paper, what fucking now! She goes, Brittany, Ashley, and I were talking. OH BOY. Seriously, I’m dead. I just want to die. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Brittany. Is she laughing? Hmm…So, Mrs. Doughtry goes……….*deep breath*
I’ve just been promoted to Assistant Editor in Chief (well, one of three). OH MY FUCKING GOD! I’m obsessed with the paper. No, wait, I’m “dedicated” as my mom calls it. For what? HELL YES! FOR THIS! I worked so damn hard the past few months of school, and I went from News Page Editor, to ASSISTANT EDITOR IN CHIEF in MONTHS! Beat that.
So, I love my adviser, I love the paper, I love Brittany. I LOVE JOURNALISM! I want to become a journalist, and god save everyone, but I will become one!
