Just out of curiosity, has anyone here ever worked on tracking their family tree?
Personally, I've been SO curious about it before the few years, and I've never really done a lot of hardcore research. (I'm seventeen, and these things cost money, ya know.) But a while back we got a free trial at Ancestry.com. I got a lot of information that we printed out and then stuffed away in file. Well, a while ago I was searching for a site for one of my fanfics, where I could make an easy to read and edit Charmed family tree. I found an amazing one at tribalpages.com/ and recently I decided to do my personal Family Tree.
That's when I discovered they also had a free search engine. I decided I'd look for my Great Grandpa Kenny. Guess what I found instead? My Great-Great Grandpa Merrill! And actually, I found him on a tree that traces his ancestors back SEVERAL generations!! You can imagine how excited I was, until I realized that it stopped with Merrill and his wife, Stella. So I e-mailed the woman who had created that family tree and asked her about it. After she replied to my first e-mail, she did a little more digging and actually came up with census records that backed up the background history I had given her about the family. She said she was positive that we were related. (Her great [x4] grandfather is my Great-Great Grandfather's first cousin.) And she even sent me a photograph of a WWI draft card that she found while she was digging, which was my Great Grandpa Kenny's!
But wait. It gets better! How? Well, the woman had no ancestors for Stella's line, and so I did a search for her, and found her on another family tree. So I got in touch with the man that created that one, and found he lives in England. And although he couldn't tell me about Stella, as he said she was added by a GEDCOM import, her ancestors can actually be traced back to the 1500's, in the UK!
I'm so excited. I even found a picture of my Great-Great Grandfather's aunt and uncle. I can't wait to dig in even further.
Now, if only I could find my mother's older, long lost half sister, I'd be set. (It's one of my goals in life, to find and meet her and any possible cousins that I may have. Unfortunately, I don't know her name. And, she may not even know that she has a younger half sister. How very Charmed, right?)
