Act Three
[Scene: Aladdin Resort. Casino floor. PHOEBE is standing next to COLE as he pulls the lever on a slot machine. The first wheel lands on a picture of cherries and a few moments later, the next wheel also lands on the cherries. PHOEBE grabs onto COLE’s arm excitedly and begins to bounce on the balls of her feet.]PHOEBE: Come on, cherries, cherries, cherries! (She crosses both her fingers and nudges COLE excitedly. The last wheels stops on a bell. PHOEBE groans and wrinkles her nose. The slot machine spots out five winning quarters for the double cherries and PHOEBE scoops them into a plastic casino bucket. COLE reaches for the bucket, but PHOEBE grabs his hand.) Maybe we should take a break?
COLE: You’re probably right. (They start to walk away.) Though as soon as we leave-
MAN’s VOICE: Yes!
(COLE and PHOEBE look behind them, to see a man winning on the slot machine they just played on.)
PHOEBE: Ugh! Can you believe that?
COLE: Well, it is Vegas.
PHOEBE: That should’ve been us! (She wags her hand.) I should’ve been making a fool of myself right there! (She snorts.) We just lost five bucks and for what, so that guy could win?
(COLE laughs.)
COLE: Hey, there are more important things in life than money you know. (He wraps his arm around her shoulders.) I believe I’ve got one right here.
(PHOEBE grins. As they walk by a row of slots, PHOEBE’s arm brushes one.)
[Premonition: PHOEBE pulls the lever on the slot machine and the wheels begin to turn. The first lands on a fantastic seven and PHOEBE grins excitedly. The second also lands on a fantastic seven, so PHOEBE grabs COLE’s arm in anticipation, and then the last wheel also lands on a fantastic seven and PHOEBE begins to jump up and down, squealing as the lights on the slot machine go off and the sound of winning bells fills the air.]
[Cut back to the present. COLE tugs PHOEBE’s arm, but PHOEBE seems to be staring blankly at the slot machine they’re standing next to.]COLE: Phoebe?
(PHOEBE shakes her head.)
PHOEBE: Hey, do you have a quarter?
(COLE looks confused.)
COLE: Uh, yeah, (he digs into his pocket) why?
PHOEBE: I wanna try my luck.
(PHOEBE takes COLE’s quarter and inserts it in the slot at the vacant machine that prompted her vision. Anxiously, she pulls the lever on the slot machine and the wheels begin to turn. The first lands on a fantastic seven and PHOEBE grins excitedly. Just as in her vision, the second also lands on a fantastic seven, so PHOEBE grabs COLE’s arm in anticipation, and then the last wheel also lands on a fantastic seven and PHOEBE begins to jump up and down, squealing as the lights on the slot machine go off and the sound of winning bells fills the air. COLE stares in shock as the machine begins to produce a shower of silver coins.)
COLE: I can’t believe it! (He picks PHOEBE up and spins her around before kissing her.) You just won five-hundred dollars!
(PHOEBE squeals excitedly as she puts her hands under the rush of spilling quarters and then looks back at COLE with gleaming eyes.)
PHOEBE: Forget the bucket, I think we’re going to need a bag!
[Cut to outside Prue’s hotel room. PRUE swipes her hotel card key and the red light on the door turns green, so she pulls the handle and the door opens. At the same time, PIPER pops her head out of the room next door.]PIPER: Hey, glad to see you’re finally back. (She steps into the hallway and ties the belt on her silk robe.)
PRUE: I didn’t think you’d still be up.
(PIPER laughs.)
PIPER: When you’re a mother, you will discover just how wrong that statement is. (She notices PRUE’s relaxed look.) You look like you had a good night.
(PRUE shrugs.)
PRUE: Maybe I did.
PIPER: (curiously) Care to share?
(PRUE pushes open her door.)
PRUE: How long have you got?
PIPER: With my angelic husband on blessed baby duty? (She walks into PRUE’s room.) As long as you want.
PRUE: Perfect. (She follows PIPER in and shuts the door.)
[Cut to Paige and Glenn’s hotel room. PAIGE is on the balcony, watching the night sky. GLENN walks and wraps his arms around PAIGE.]GLENN: I don’t know how you did it, but this has been amazing.
(PAIGE smirks.)
PAIGE: Well, to tell you the truth, it wasn’t that hard, all I had to do was be my naturally charming self and talk the travel agency into giving me four regular rooms instead of one suite and viola, instant family vacation. (GLENN teases her with a strawberry, which she steals a bite of.)
GLENN: This has been by far the best trip I’ve ever been on.
(PAIGE turns around.)
PAIGE: And who knew it would only be eight hours from home, right? (She spreads out her arms.) I mean, you’ve been all over the world, and who knew-
GLENN: (interrupting) Maybe I would’ve found out sooner if you’d gone with me.
(PAIGE rolls her eyes.)
PAIGE: Well, you know what they say, sometimes things are better when you wait.
GLENN: And waiting to find out you were a witch was-
(PAIGE raises her finger.)
PAIGE: And whitelighter, don’t forget the whitelighter, I’m a hyphenate, remember? (She winks.)
GLENN: However you want to put it, it was all worth it.
PAIGE: I couldn’t agree more. (They kiss.) Hey, I’m feeling lucky, so what would you say to strolling down to the floor and hitting a few tables with me?
(GLENN holds out his hand.)
GLENN: I’d say, Luck be the Lady.
(PAIGE places her hand in GLENN’s and throws him a quirky grin.)
PAIGE: I like the sound of that.
[Scene: The Vegas Strip. PHOEBE and COLE are walking amongst a crowd of tourists. They pass Greek styled fountains and PHOEBE leans her head on COLE’s arm.]PHOEBE: I need to tell you something.
COLE: What?
(PHOEBE holds up a wad of bills.)
PHOEBE: We can’t keep this.
COLE: What? (He stops walking.) What are you talking about?
PHOEBE: I had a premonition.
COLE: About giving away five-hundred dollars?
PHOEBE: No, about winning it. (She smiles disappointedly.) That’s how I knew to put the coin in that machine, because I saw myself winning it. (She pats runs her nail across the edge of the bills, creating a fluttering noise.) I can’t keep it, because that would be personal gain.
COLE: Why would you get a premonition like that anyway, if you’re not allowed to keep it?
(PHOEBE starts to shrug, then her eyes seem to gleam.)
PHOEBE: You know what… (She spins the bag.) I think I know what I have to do with this. (She grabs COLE’s arm.) Come on! (She pulls him off down the sidewalk.)
[Scene: Aladdin Resort. Prue’s hotel room. PRUE and PIPER are sitting cross-legged on the bed. PRUE is smiling.]PRUE: …he wants to meet after his shift.
PIPER: (suspiciously) For what?
(PRUE shrugs.)
PRUE: He said he wanted to show me something, a “surprise.”
PIPER: He just seems to be full of surprises.
PRUE: What’s that supposed to mean?
(PIPER shakes her head.)
PIPER: Nothing. (pause) He just seems…really, really nice, that’s all.
PRUE: Is it impossible for me to meet a nice guy?
PIPER: No! Of course not, it’s just-
PRUE: I thought you said you wanted me to have a good time on this trip.
PIPER: I did. I do!
PRUE: And the second I start having a good time, you’re suddenly telling me it isn’t right!
PIPER: That’s not true!
PRUE: You know what, maybe you should just go.
PIPER: Prue! (PRUE stubbornly waves her arm at the door.) You’re not acting like yourself.
PRUE: No, Piper, I’m not. I’m acting happy, is that really such a crime? (She turns away before PIPER can answer. The hotel door flies open.) Please leave.
(PIPER curls her fingers nervously, then shakes her head.)
PIPER: Fine… (She walks to the door and then looks back.) Just be careful tonight, okay? This is Vegas after all. (The door shuts in her face.)
[Scene: The Vegas Strip. PHOEBE spots the homeless man she’d given money to earlier that day, still sitting on the side of the street, holding out his soup can. She looks slyly at COLE.]PHOEBE: There really are no coincidences, are there? (She and COLE walk over to the homeless man and PHOEBE taps him on the shoulder. He turns around and smiles, revealing a missing tooth.)
HOMELESS MAN: Oh, I remember you. (PHOEBE takes his hand and places the wad of money into it.) What’s this?
PHOEBE: It’s a gift. (The homeless man peers at the money and his face turns pale.)
HOMELESS MAN: Are these-
PHOEBE: Real? (She nods.) Yes.
(The homeless man gingerly traces the hundred dollar bill with his thumb.)
HOMELESS MAN: You’re joking. (He looks around.) This can’t be real.
COLE: (quietly) It’s five-hundred. (He gives the man a pat on the shoulder.) We know you can find a good use for it.
HOMELESS MAN: But-
PHOEBE: Have a good night! (She and COLE walk off, but not before a quick glance behind her, to see the homeless man jumping up and down along the sidewalk. She smiles.) You know, I disagree about not being able to save everyone; the trick is, you have to help one person at a time. (COLE suddenly grabs her arm and turns her towards him, kissing her. She laughs.) What was that for?
COLE: Just because.
PHOEBE: It seems a little overdramatic for the middle of the sidewalk.
COLE: Well it’s Vegas, isn’t it? Things are supposed to be overdramatic. If you don’t believe me, just look at that McDonald’s sign, I bet you there’s not another one in the world where the “M” is made of flashing lights.
(PHOEBE laughs again.)
PHOEBE: I think you’ve been hanging around Drake too much.
COLE: That’s probably true.
PHOEBE: Aw well, (she bats her eyelashes on mock flirtation) I love you anyway. (They continue walking, arm-in-arm, when COLE stops, causing PHOEBE to jerk back.) Something catch your eye?
(PHOEBE looks back at him and sees him staring across the street. She follows his line of vision and sees a flashing pink sign that reads, “Vegas I-Dos!” COLE turns his head slightly, catching PHOEBE’s eye. PHOEBE starts to shake her head, but COLE grabs her hand.)
COLE: Wait. (He squeezes her hand.) Just hear me out for a minute. We’re already here, and everything you’ve been worried about, planning and the Elders, it wouldn’t matter because we could just do it right now.
PHOEBE: Cole-
COLE: And if you wanted, we could do the traditional wedding in the future. (He looks her dead in the eyes.) What do you think?
(PHOEBE's lips quiver as she looks between COLE and the wedding chapel.)
PHOEBE: But we don’t even have a ri- (COLE reaches into the inner pocket of his leather jacket and pulls out the same velvet box he presented PHOEBE with in Paris) -ng.
COLE: Phoebe, please, (he opens the box) marry me!
[Flashback: PHOEBE is standing with PRUE and PAIGE by a picnic table in COLE’s story.]PRUE: It looks like Cole’s greatest desire was for you to accept his proposal.
PHOEBE: Yeah…
[Cut back to the present. PHOEBE lifts her gaze from the diamond ring to COLE’s pleading eyes, then slowly nods her head.]PHOEBE: Yes.
COLE: (excitedly) Yes?
(PHOEBE nods.)
PHOEBE: Yes. (COLE throws his arms around PHOEBE and kisses her passionately, then takes the ring out of the box and slides it onto her ring finger.)
COLE: You have no idea how much I’ve waited for this. (He kisses her and then grabs her hand and pulls her across the street.)
