Act Two
[Scene: Burge Elementary School. Gym. PAIGE and PHOEBE are sitting on the edge of the stage. PAIGE is munching on an overly frosted cupcake while PHOEBE is eating a homemade rice crispy treat.]PAIGE: So…heard from Jason again?
(PHOEBE frowns.)
PHOEBE: I don’t want to talk about it.
PAIGE: Why not? Is he an ass behind the handsome exterior?
PHOEBE: No!
PAIGE: Then why are you so resistant to liking him? (She points her finger accusingly.) And I know you like him.
PHOEBE: Paige-
PAIGE: Look, Pheebs-
PHOEBE: It’s not that he’s not a nice guy, Paige…he’s just-
PAIGE: Not Cole?
(PHOEBE sighs.)
PAIGE: Phoebe, nobody will ever be Cole for you. (She lays her hand on her sister’s leg.) I know that he’ll always reserve a special place in your heart…but that doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to be happy with other guys just because he’s gone. I mean…I think he’d want that for you, don’t you?
PHOEBE: It doesn’t make me feel any better though. I still feel like being happy with someone else is a betrayal to Cole somehow. (She stares down at her rice crispy treat and rotates it between her fingers.) And the thing is, (she looks up and an odd look washes over her face) hey.
(PAIGE wags her finger.)
PAIGE: Oh no you don’t! Don’t try to change the subject-
PHOEBE: Isn’t that the guy who picked you up the other night?
PAIGE: What?
(PHOEBE points.)
PHOEBE: The one you said you met at the bar last week. Jett, I think?
(PAIGE lifts her head to look across the gym. She spots the man who’d sent her the alcoholic beverage at the bar the week before, JETT.)
PAIGE: I wonder what he’s doing here. (She narrows her eyes.) Maybe he has a niece or nephew or something? A friend?
(PHOEBE gives PAIGE a little shove.)
PHOEBE: Go say hi.
(PAIGE starts to slide off the stage and then flips her head back around.)
PAIGE: Wait a minute! I see what you’re trying to do, you want me to go talk to him so we won’t have to finish our conversation, aren’t you?
PHOEBE: Where would you ever get that idea? (PAIGE half glares.) Oh Paige, just go say hi. We can talk again later, I promise. I just don’t want to see young lust go to waste.
(PAIGE playfully hits PHOEBE and jumps off the stage.)
PAIGE: (muttering) Young lust.
(PHOEBE smirks as PAIGE sashays over to JETT.)
[Cut to Piper and Sheila’s booth. PIPER is once again taking orders and cash when her husband, LEO WYATT, approaches the booth. PIPER’s face lights up.]PIPER: Leo! (She jumps up from her seat and leans over the counter and gives LEO a quick kiss on the lips, but as she pulls away, LEO’s expression remains the same. PIPER’s face falls.) Uh oh….you’re not here with my food, are you?
LEO: I’m afraid not.
PIPER: What’s going on?
LEO: Can you take a break?
(PIPER glances over at SHELIA.)
PIPER: Hey Sheila, could you manage without me for a few minutes?
SHELIA: No problem!
PIPER: Thanks. (She takes off her apron and lays it in the back and proceeds to slip out of the booth.) What’s this all about?
LEO: The Elders think there’s a new demon your sisters need to vanquish…they think it’s responsible for a string of recent killings.
PIPER: Have you told my sisters?
LEO: Not yet. I sensed you were all here, so I came here first. Do you know where they are?
(PIPER motions her arm.)
PIPER: Not really. Paige and Phoebe should be here somewhere, but Prue’s still at the Manor.
LEO: No, she’s here too. (He closes his eyes and opens them again, this time turning his head in the direction of the stage where PHOEBE is.) Well there’s one, Prue and Paige are somewhere in the crowd and I can’t pinpoint them exactly.
PIPER: I’ll go fill in Phoebe, you round up the other two. (She heads to the stage while LEO trudges back into the thick of the gym.)
[Cut to Paige. She’s talking to JETT, who looks quite nervous.]PAIGE: You know, you don’t look so well, is something wrong?
JETT: Well actually, I’m not really feeling too well at the moment. I’m a little-
WOMAN's VOICE: Jett? (JETT and PAIGE look in the direction of the voice. The woman, LEANNE about their age approaches. She stops abruptly as she sees PAIGE with JETT. She looks right at JETT.) Friend of yours?
(PAIGE smiles brightly.)
PAIGE: Paige Matthews. (She holds out her hand.)
LEANNE: Unbelievable! (She jabs JETT in the shoulder with her finger.) I can’t believe you have the audacity to meet up with your floozies even at your daughter’s school!
(PAIGE stares dumbstruck.)
JETT: Leanne-
(PAIGE notices the ring on LEANNE’s finger and turns furiously to JETT.)
PAIGE: You’re married?!
LEANNE: Oh don’t play stupid! You couldn’t possibly be naive enough to not see through his charade. (She throws up her hands at JETT.) You know what, don’t even bother coming home tonight!
(LEANNE storms off, bumping into LEO as he approaches. JETT looks sheepishly at PAIGE, who raises her arm to him.)
LEO: Paige!
(PAIGE halts her hand as she spots her brother-in-law. She exhales.)
PAIGE: Don’t bother coming back to P3 if you know what’s good for you. (She grabs LEO by the sleeve of his shirt and leads him away.)
LEO: What was that?
PAIGE: (stubbornly) I don’t want to talk about it. (She curls her fist.) Piper’s over-
LEO: I was actually looking for you.
(PAIGE stops.)
PAIGE: That doesn’t sound good.
[Cut to Prue and Mitch.]PRUE: That sounds great! (She digs into her pocket and pulls out a couple of dollars, which she hands to a little girl who’s sitting behind a booth.)
LITTLE GIRL: Thank you!
(The LITTLE GIRL hands PRUE a plastic bag containing two large snicker doodle cookies. PRUE opens the bag as she and MITCH saunter away from the booth. She pulls out one snicker doodle and hands it to MITCH and then pulls out the other one and begins to munch on it herself.)
PRUE: Oh my gosh, (she chops away on the cookie) I love these things! Snicker doodles are my favorite type of cookie.
MITCH: Really? How come? I would’ve pegged you for chocolate chip.
PRUE: Double chocolate chip is my second favorite. (She swallows her bite and licks some of the cinnamon off her finger.) But snicker doodles…they were my mom’s favorite. She used to make them for me and my sisters when we were little; sometimes Piper and I would even help. (She sighs fondly.) They were indescribable…it must have been some special ingredient. She used to say she’d give the recipe to me someday.
MITCH: I’m sorry.
PRUE: Don’t be. (She shrugs.) Maybe I’ll come across it somewhere someday, you never know.
(MITCH smiles.)
MITCH: You really don’t. (He suddenly squints.) Hey, isn’t that your brother-in-law? (PRUE looks and LEO waves. MITCH waves back.) Hey, Leo, nice to see you again. We were just looking for your wife.
LEO: What a coincidence…Piper was just looking for Prue. (He smiles oddly, causing PRUE to give him another glance.) Would you mind if I stole Prue for just a few minutes? (He shrugs.) Apparently it’s a sister thing.
MITCH: Far be it from me to get between sisters. (He waves his arm.) Go right ahead.
LEO: Thanks! (He tugs PRUE forward.) This way…
[Cut to a vacant classroom. PIPER, PHOEBE and PAIGE are waiting. PAIGE has seated herself on the top of a desk and she appears to be stewing, while PHOEBE is pacing and just looks lost in her own thoughts. The door opens and LEO walks in with PRUE.]PRUE: What is this all about?
(LEO shuts the door.)
LEO: The Sandman.
PIPER: Please tell me you’re trying to prank us. The sandman’s not real, right?
LEO: It’s a nickname-
PHOEBE: He’s a demon?
PAIGE: (muttering) I wouldn’t be surprised.
LEO: No, it’s a nickname for a demon…though this particular demon isn’t really a man. It’s just a creature, kind of like a poltergeist of sorts. It has the ability to inhabit sand and dirt.
PRUE: So a Sand Demon?
LEO: Basically. And The Elders believe it’s responsible for five recent deaths in the bay area. Each of the victims was suffocated by sand inexplicably filling their lungs.
(PAIGE, PHOEBE and PIPER look at each other.)
PRUE: You guys know something.
PHOEBE: A boy was taken to the hospital today, he was found in the sandbox…and his mouth and nose were filled with sand.
PAIGE: That’s not a coincidence.
LEO: Where’s the sandbox?
(PHOEBE waves her arm.)
PHOEBE: Out on the playground, this way.
[Cut to the sandbox. The hole is still there as LEO, PIPER and the Charmed Ones approach. PHOEBE points.]PHOEBE: Okay, that was not there last time we were.
PAIGE: Should you try and get a vision?
PIPER: And risk it attacking you?
(PRUE waves her arm at the sound. An invisible hit of telekinetic energy reaches the sand and blasts it into the air and it falls harmlessly back into the sandbox.)
PRUE: It doesn’t appear to be alive at the moment.
PHOEBE: Well, we can’t risk anymore people getting hurt. (She steps away from her sisters and kneels down next to the edge of the sandbox. She thrusts her hand forward and grabs a fistful of grainy sand.)
[Premonition: The man that attempted to perform CPR on the little boy is at a park, catching a different little boy at the end of a slide. The sand underneath his feet suddenly opens up into a gaping hole and he falls in. The little boy, still on the slide, begins to scream and tries to crawl back up the slide. The hole closes up, holding the man hostage up to his neck as if he were in quicksand. Then sand begins to rush into his nose and mouth.]
[Cut back to the present. The sand slips from PHOEBE’s hand in a small stream as she opens her eyes. She looks at PAIGE.]PHOEBE: It’s after the guy who got to the little boy.
(The sand shifts in the box, but nobody notices. PHOEBE pushes herself up from the edge of the sandbox and begins to walk back to her sisters when a funnel of sand flies out of the box and encircles her in a dust storm.)
PIPER: Phoebe! (Her heads flips to her husband.) Leo, orb her out of there!
(LEO attempts to orb to PHOEBE, but his orbs hit the dust twister and bounce off. His orbs hit the blacktop and he reforms. PRUE throws out her hand and a bolt of electricity shoots from her palm, grazing the side of the dust storm. The speed slows. PRUE repeats the maneuver with the opposite side of the dust storm and PHOEBE is suddenly knocked free from its clutches. She lands on the blacktop, coughing and struggling. Finally, PRUE thrusts out both of her hands and hits the dust cloud head on with two electrical bolts. The dust cloud explodes, sending bits of dust and newly formed glass everywhere. PIPER helps PHOEBE up and the five of them run back to the school, as far away from the sandbox as possible. PIPER begins to pat PHOEBE’s back as she coughs up mouthfuls of sand.)
PRUE: Leo, The Elders didn’t mention how to vanquish this thing by any chance, did They?
LEO: No…They thought it was vanquished years ago, so They were shocked when They began noticing the familiar killings.
PAIGE: How did They believe it was killed last time?
LEO: Water. It was melted.
PIPER: So you’re telling me we need ruby slippers?
