Act Five
[Scene: The Morris home. Backyard. The bright blue moonlight from the first quarter moon is gazing down over a large group of children who are gathered around a fire. A man dressed as a ghost football player is telling a ghost story. Small clusters of parents and other adults are also hanging around to listen to the story. SHELIA and DARRYL are sitting at a picnic table, SHELIA with BABY MELINDA in her lap and DARRYL with BABY CHRIS. ALICIA bounds up to SHELIA.]ALICIA: Mommy, look! (She points to the sky.)
SHELIA: I know, sweetheart. It’s blue. It’s a very special moon, tonight. You probably won’t see another blue moon in your lifetime.
(ALICIA shakes her head.)
ALICIA: No, (emphasizing) look! (She points again.) It’s growing, Mommy!
SHELIA: What? (She laughs.) Alicia, don’t be silly, moon’s don’t (she looks up at the sky and notices that the moon is getting bigger, filling out) get bigger… (She grabs DARRYL’s arm.) Am I seeing things or is the moon actually phasing before my eyes?
(DARRYL looks up at the moon. At that point, whispers are starting to spread among the children, some of whom are looking up at the sky.)
LITTLE BOY: Look! (He points. One by one, the adults begin to look up at the sky too and sure enough, the moon has changed from a first quarter moon to a waxing gibbous moon.)
DARRYL: (muttering) That’s definitely not normal!
SHELIA: What do you think is causing it?
DARRYL: I really couldn’t tell you… (whispering) But I have my suspicions…
[Scene: Manor. Dining room. LILLITH is standing at the back of the room, staring at the windows. The blue moon, now almost a full moon, is casting an eerie glow on her face. She steps back from the window and eyes CHRIS, who is tied to one of the dining room chairs. She moves around CHRIS towards the entry way, where PRUE has been propped up with a single pillow and some blankets on the floor beneath the chandelier.]LILLITH: You know, Prue, this is a very special night. Blue moons, let alone full blue moons, don’t happen all that often.
PRUE: (gritting her teeth) And I’m sure you’re about to tell me why.
(LILLITH drapes her arm over the stair banister and gazes at PRUE.)
LILLITH: Do you know when the last blue moon occurred?
(Instead of answering, PRUE clutches her stomach and screams. The Manor quakes and the lights in the entire house flicker three times.)
PRUE: (screaming) Why are you doing this to us?!
LILLITH: (calmly) June twenty-third, seventeen-thirty-six. (The house rattles again and she glances up at the chandelier as a few of the bulbs explode.) And before that, one occurred in February of sixteen-seventy.
(Two thick threads of electricity unwind from PRUE’s hands as another contraction swarms over her body. One hits the stair banister, splintering a chunk of it and the other collides with the wall, charring it. PRUE’s eyes flash menacingly.)
PRUE: You evil bitch! You can’t have her, I won’t let you!
(LILLITH immediately finds herself pressed against the wall thanks to PRUE’s heated telekinetic hold. LILLITH starts to laugh.)
LILLITH: I’m not interested in your daughter, Prudence. Not so much as I’m interested in what she can do for me.
PRUE: What can she possibly do for you? An infant! What do you want? Her power? Is that what you’re after, like every other warlock?
LILLITH: Don’t be naive, child! Do I look like I need her power? Of course not! I have plenty of my own. Petty theft is below me. No. I have bigger plans for your precious little girl.
(PRUE yowls again and her concentrated hold on LILLITH vanishes. LILLITH glides down the hall to her feet. She brushes herself off.)
LILLITH: There are things in this world that aren’t clear cut, Prudence. Things like good and evil, but you Warrens don’t seem to understand that. (She clicks her tongue.) I have faith that your daughter will see the light though. (The chandelier flashes again.) Excuse me, poor choice of words, perhaps I should say the shades of gray? I think she’ll be able to look beyond good and evil and how goddamn ridiculous they both are.
PRUE: I don’t know where you get off giving this speech to me. You don’t deserve to call yourself a Warren.
LILLITH: Why would I want to? Why would I want to myself a Warren, or a Tate, or a-
PRUE: Aaaah!
(The windows at the far end of the dining room blow out. LILLITH smirks. Blue moonlight floods through the hole where the windows were and washes over CHRIS’s face. CHRIS begins to stir.)
LILLITH: It’s time!
(PRUE hugs her stomach.)
PRUE: No.
LILLITH: This is like Death, Prue, you can’t fight it.
(LILLITH points her finger at PRUE who jerks back and becomes pinned to the floor with her palms up. Her face darkens to a scarlet color as she screams. Two bolts of electricity pummel from PRUE’s hands and hit the ceiling, causing plaster to fall around PRUE and LILLITH. LILLITH kneels down in front of PRUE and forcefully presses her hands to PRUE’s knees.)
LILLITH: I can see her head, (she glances over PRUE's knees to get a look at PRUE’s face) she’s got raven hair, just like her mother. (The grandfather clock chimes. LILLITH glances up at the front doors.) Your sisters should be bursting in at any moment now, if my premonition proves true, which means unfortunately I won’t be able to stay for the birth. (She rises to her feet and her shadow passes over PRUE's face.) But know that I have promised Volac a sister and I do intend to deliver, (she snickers) so I will be back in the near future…unfortunately for you, we probably won’t be seeing each other again. (The front doors rattle.) That’s my cue.
(The funnel of flames mixed with green rays of light shatter through the front doors. LILLITH blinks out. PRUE shrieks.)
[Cut to November 2, 1975. PATTY is lying on the dining room table, screaming. PENNY is standing in front of her, looking as stern as ever.]PENNY: Push, Patty!
PATTY: I’m trying, but she has a giant head!
PENNY: Like mother, like daughter.
(PATTY snarls. The sound of the front doors can be heard.)
PATTY: (screaming) Victor! (She hears the sound of footsteps and then VICTOR BENNETT runs in.)
VICTOR: Patty! Oh my god! (He rushes to her side.)
PATTY: Where’re the girls?
VICTOR: At Andy’s. (He looks at PENNY, who scowls at him.) We saw him at the park, they wanted to go visit- (PATTY vice grips his hand and hollers as another contraction washes over her.) Why isn’t she at the hospital?
PENNY: There was a demon and we didn’t have time. (She picks up a pair of scissors from the table. PENNY’s eyes light up.) I see her head!
(PATTY’s face turns a plum color as VICTOR’s hand turns red. VICTOR yelps.)
PENNY: Suck it up, Victor. She’s in more pain than you’ll be.
PATTY: (screaming) I’m having a baby for Christ sakes, can’t you at least put aside your bickering for that! (She stiffens up.) Oh god!
PENNY: Push!
PATTY: (screaming) I’m trying!
VICTOR: Come on, Patty!
PATTY: Her head’s too big, I don’t think I can- (Her voice hitches and her shoulders stiffen up.)
[Premonition: PATTY is standing with PRUE, PIPER, and PHOEBE in PIPER’s bedroom. PIPER is dressed in a wedding dress and PRUE and PHOEBE are wearing matching bridesmaids dresses. The four of them join in a four-way hug.]
[Cut back to 1975. PATTY’s eyes flash open and she gasps. There’s a clipping noise and then the sound of crying fills the air. PENNY proudly holds up a wailing BABY PHOEBE HALLIWELL and wipes her off with a towel before wrapping her in a blanket and placing her in PATTY’s arms. Tears are streaming down PATTY’s face.]PATTY: Shh, everything’s going to be okay now. (She strokes BABY PHOEBE's face and looks up at VICTOR. VICTOR’s eyes are wide. PATTY tentatively holds the bundle out to him.) Here. (VICTOR takes BABY PHOEBE in his arms and stares at her.) She’s perfect.
VICTOR: Welcome to the world, Phoebe Elizabeth.
[Cut to present day. PIPER, LEO, PAIGE, and PHOEBE are crowded around PRUE. The light from the chandelier is glowing down on them. LEO is attempting to massage PRUE’s shoulders. DRAKE and AVA NICOLAE are also there.]PRUE: I swear I’m gonna kill Matt if I ever see him again! (Her fists clench.) Aaah!
(PIPER holds up her brand new niece. She looks wide eyed as PRUE slumps back against LEO. PHOEBE squeezes PRUE’s hand excitedly.)
PHOEBE: Oh my gosh!
PAIGE: (beaming) She’s beautiful!
(PIPER cradles her niece as she wipes her off with a blanket.)
PIPER: So this is what if feels like to be an auntie?
PHOEBE: Amazing, right?
PIPER: Prue, she’s the spitting image of you. Big blue eyes and raven hair.
PRUE: I wanna see her.
(PIPER gently leans over and places the baby in PRUE’s arms. PRUE stares at the infant with a renewed light in her eyes.)
PRUE: I didn’t know this was possible. (She looks at PIPER.) Why didn’t you tell me?
PIPER: Tell you what?
PRUE: That you could love something so much that you’ve only known for ten seconds.
(PIPER grins.)
PIPER: Because it’s just something you have to experience yourself.
(PRUE glances at AVA.)
PRUE: Is she okay?
AVA: She looks fine to me. Pink and healthy.
PRUE: But she’s not crying.
AVA: Not all babies cry when they’re born. Usually they’re given a pop to make them cry to ensure that they’re breathing, (she motions her hand) but she’s clearly breathing, so I’d say she’s doing alright. (She smiles.) Congratulations, Prue.
DRAKE: So, what’re you going to name her?
(PHOEBE claps her hands excitedly.)
PHOEBE: Yeah, yeah, yeah! We’ve been dying to know! (Her eyes twinkle.) It’s Phoebe isn’t it!
PAIGE: Oh please, (she waves her hand dismissively) in your dreams, Pheebs. (She folds her arms smugly.) It’s Paige Jr. right?
PRUE: (gazing at her daughter) Drea.
PAIGE & PAIGE: (confusedly) Drea?
PRUE: Yes, Drea. (She strokes the side of DREA HALLIWELL’s cheek.) Andrea Penelope Halliwell.
PIPER: (softly) After Andy.
PRUE: (nodding) She should’ve been his. (She rocks DREA in her arms.)
PIPER: I think in a way, she kind of is. (She smiles.) I wonder what his reaction will be when he finds out at the Wiccaning?
(PRUE’s face falls a little.)
PRUE: If he comes.
PIPER: Why wouldn’t he?
(PRUE shrugs.)
PRUE: I’m just saying… (She shrugs.) Never mind, I’m sure you’re right, he’ll be there. (She stares into DREA’s bright blue eyes.) He wouldn’t miss that, right?
(DRAKE swivels his head around as a curious expression writes itself onto his face.)
DRAKE: Hey, where are the kids?
(Everyone else notices that MELINDA and CHRIS are nowhere in sight.)
[Scene: Cemetery. The blue moon is once again a first quarter moon. It’s light is reflecting off the of headstones in the cemetery. The sound of leaves and twigs crunching under shoes can be heard. A flashlight shines over several headstones, including those of PENNY and PATTY.]CHRIS: (telepathically) He’s not here.
[Cut to Melinda. She’s walking down a dirt path, shining her flashlight back and forth. The flashlight passes over the mausoleum. She turns and shines her flashlight along a row of graves. It passes over ANDY TRUDEAU’s headstone and MELINDA keeps moving.]MELINDA: (telepathically) I’ve got nothing on my end of the cemetery either.
[Cut to Chris. He shines his flashlight up at the night sky.]CHRIS: (telepathically) What should we do?
MELINDA's VOICE: (telepathically) Just go back to the Manor, make sure he doesn’t show up. I’ll keep looking.
(CHRIS turns off his flashlight and pauses to stare at the blue moon. He orbs out.)
[Scene: Manor. Prue’s bedroom. PRUE is in bed now, dressed in a white nightgown and propped up by a bunch of pillows. DREA is sleeping in her arms, wrapped in a pale lavender baby blanket with a ribbon edge and hand stitched “P” in the corner. There’s a soft knock at the door and PRUE looks up as PIPER walks in. She smiles lightly and takes a seat on the bed next to her sister. She points to the blanket.]PIPER: Hey, that’s the one Mom made you.
PRUE: Yeah…I figure I’m a little too big for it now…and it’s not like I inherited her talent for knitting, it’s not really my thing.
PIPER: I knitted the Twins their own blankets, I could probably make Andrea one too if you’d like.
(PRUE smiles.)
PRUE: I would.
PIPER: (laughing) Me too.
(There’s another knock at the door.)
LEO's VOICE: It’s me.
PRUE: Come in.
(LEO pokes his head in.)
LEO: Hey, Darryl just called. They wanted me to give you their congratulations.
PRUE: Thanks.
LEO: (to PIPER) I think I’m gonna go pick up the Twins. Are you going to stay here?
PIPER: Yeah. (She shrugs.) No offense to Darryl or Sheila, but I think I’ve had enough fun for one Halloween.
LEO: They kind of figured. I’ll be back soon.
(PIPER blows him a kiss as he shuts the door.)
[Scene: Sunroom. PAIGE is setting a crystal on the windowsill. She stops to gaze out the window at the full moon and doesn’t notice DRAKE's reflection in the window.]DRAKE: Busy?
(PAIGE jumps and turns around.)
PAIGE: Hey. (She laughs.) No, sorry, I was just setting up the demonic alarm system.
DRAKE: Oh. (He shrugs.) Well I was just wondering if you wanted to go out.
PAIGE: Excuse me?
DRAKE: To P3, I mean. (He laughs.) You’re all dressed up anyway. (PAIGE looks down at her PRISCILLA PRESLEY costume.) I was planning to head over there to tonight. (He shrugs.) Sing a couple songs, you know? If you don’t wanna go-
PAIGE: No. (She smoothes the end of her short dress.) I think that’d be fun. And it’s not like we’re going to be doing much else tonight, anyway. I might as well go out and show off my costume. I did pay for the rental, so…
DRAKE: Let’s rock n’ roll then. (He slips her hand into his.)
[Scene: P3. Backstage. DRAKE and PAIGE shimmer in. From their vantage point, they can see the announcer on stage, dressed in a 1920’s style gentleman’s suit.]ANNOUNCER: …and for your pleasure tonight, I’d like to introduce the one and only King of Rock n’ Roll, Elvis Presley! (He turns to the side and tips his hand in DRAKE's direction. A round of cheers and applause can be heard. DRAKE, still holding onto PAIGE’s hand, pulls her towards the stage.)
DRAKE: (whispering) Do you know how to play a guitar?
PAIGE: (whispering) What?
DRAKE: (whispering) If you don’t-
PAIGE: (whispering) I haven’t played a guitar since college.
DRAKE: (whispering) It’s like riding a bike. (He ducks to the side, out of view of the ANNOUNCER, and behind the curtain a blue guitar appears resting against the wall. He picks it up and hands it to PAIGE.) Don’t worry, if you have somehow forgotten, I got it covered. (He winks as he pulls PAIGE out on stage and waves to the jumping P3 crowd.)
ANNOUNCER: Well what a surprise, Elvis and Priscilla everyone!
(The audience cheers again as DRAKE grabs the microphone.)
DRAKE: Well thank you, (he curls his lip) thank you very much. (He grins at PAIGE who visibly resists the urge to roll her eyes. She cradles the guitar and bats her eyelashes at him.)
PAIGE: What song do you wanna play tonight?
DRAKE: Well in honor of our this special night, what do you say to “Blue Moon”?
(The crowd roars in approval. PAIGE wiggles her fingers and begins to sway back and forth as she strums the chords on the guitar.)
PAIGE: “Blue Moon” it is…
DRAKE: “Blue moon…” (He turns to look at PAIGE as he sways to the sound of the guitar.) “You saw me standing alone…Without a dream in my heart…” (He walks over to PAIGE and holds the microphone in front of her lips. PAIGE shakes her head, but DRAKE pushes the microphone closer to her. PAIGE shakes her head again so DRAKE moves his face close to hers.) “Without a dream in my heart…” (He looks at her expectantly.)
PAIGE: “Without a love of my own.”
(DRAKE grins.)
[Scene: The Morris home. The blue moon is shining above their house, making the front walkway look like its glowing.]DRAKE: (v/o) “Blue moon…” (LEO walks up the front walk.) “You knew just what I was there for…”
[Cut to inside the den. BABY MELINDA and BABY CHRIS are asleep on blankets in the playpen area and the party has started to clear out quite a bit. There are still leftover plates and cups everywhere, but SHELIA and DARRYL seem unaware. Instead, they’re holding each other and dancing on the hardwood as blue moonlight filters in through the glass doors and reflects off their faces as they turn in a circle.]DRAKE: (v/o) “You heard me saying a prayer for…”
(DARRYL and SHELIA share a soft kiss. LEO walks in and SHELIA sees him as she’s pulling out of the kiss. She waves her hand and LEO walks over. LEO appears to be thanking DARRYL and SHELIA, then he leans over the enclosed play area and begins to gently wake up BABY MELINDA and BABY CHRIS.)
[Scene: Manor. Prue’s bedroom. PRUE is standing in front of the windows, rocking DREA in her arms. The blue moonlight is flooding in and making her white nightgown look blue and enhancing the color of her eyes. She shifts her head down to admire DREA.]DRAKE: (v/o) “Someone I really could care for…”
[Cut to the entry way. PHOEBE is heading for the doors. CHRIS comes out of the living and she starts following him. She gives him an odd look and he points towards the front doors.]
[Cut to outside the house. The blue moon is above the Manor and the silhouette of a man is on the front porch.]DRAKE: (v/o) “Blue moon…”
[Cut to Phoebe and Chris. PHOEBE pulls open the door to reveal MITCH PERKINS standing outside dressed in a gray robe and a long fake gray beard, with an antique watch pinned to his robe. He’s dressed as Father Time. PHOEBE smiles and MITCH holds up a pink teddy bear.]
[Cut to the sidewalk. A silhouette of a hooded person is standing on the sidewalk, watching as PHOEBE lets MITCH into the house.]DRAKE: (v/o) “You saw me standing alone…Without a dream in my heart…Without a love of my own.”
(PHOEBE shuts the door. The silhouette on the sidewalk tilts its head back and looks up at the moon.)
DRAKE: (v/o) “Blue moon…” (The figure pulls the hood down from its head, allowing the blue moonlight to shine on its face revealing him as MATTHEW CAPIELLO.) “Without a love of my own…”
